Part 2 Wanted: Wisdom – Calm Seas

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God . . . But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.”
James 1:5-6 NASB

As a petite, skinny, freckled-face girl of eight or nine, our family travelled to St. Simon’s Island, GA, for vacation one summer. Playing in the ocean with my siblings, floating on inner tubes, and riding the waves brought much pleasure. But there was one day the sea was rougher than usual due to strong winds. I can remember attempting to paddle out on my float when suddenly the churning surf capsized and tumbled me relentlessly with its power. Not knowing if I was right side up or upside down, I eventually surfaced sputtering and spewing salty water that had gone up my nose. With eyes stinging and bathing suit full of sand, I fought to maintain my footing against the waves. My little frame, working hard to get back to shore, plunged forward with the waves only to succumb to the backward pull of the current. Finally, with great determination (and fear for my life), I made it to the shore, decided to call it quits, and promptly headed for the calmer waters of the hotel pool!

Our theme verse today emphasizes that asking for wisdom must be in faith. If we ask and then hesitate or have reservations, we are like waves blown about by the wind that come rushing up on shore, then quickly recede, back and forth, back, and forth. Doubt, like the wind, blows in from all directions, causing distractions and leaving us vulnerable, unstable, and unsure. The ways and ideas of the world rush in to invade our faith in God and stir up waves of indecision, back and forth, back, and forth.

The surf is great for beach lovers and thrill seekers. However, those who seek wisdom require a steady faith, not one that is wishy washy and constantly changing. Faith, like calm seas, will provide the much needed and longed-for serenity, security, and steadfastness. Our request for wisdom is sure to follow. Part 1 Wanted: Wisdom – Just Ask!

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God.”
James 1:5a NASB

Since joining the Navy in 2001, my husband and I have moved 7 times. Each move involves more decisions than I care to recall. Decisions such as: Do we buy or rent? What area is the best and safest for our needs? How close is it to the base? Is it within our budget? Is it big enough? Too big? How much yard upkeep is required? Are there good churches in the area?

Once housing is secured, we start the moving process on base. What dates do we want the movers to pack us up and when do we want our belongings delivered? Will we move some of our belongings ourselves? Do I need to stay extra days to clean the house that we’re leaving behind?

Are you getting the picture here? Can you relate to what I am saying?

Regardless of what season of life we are in, most of us feel inadequate at some time or other when it comes to making wise decisions. You may be single and seeking whether to pursue marriage or serve God on the mission field. As a mom raising children, you are in constant need of wisdom to know now to answer the myriad of questions your kids ask daily. Choices regarding aging parents are right around the corner for many of us.

Decision overload! We face it all the time and are in desperate need of wisdom. Yet, our theme verse gives a simple answer – ASK! God is waiting. Take time to stop and ask. And then listen. [Digging deeper – Proverbs 2:1-2, 5:1, 7:4; Matthew 7:7-8; James 3:17]

On Your Mark, Get Set, Rest!

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11:28-30 The Message

I’m a planner and a doer with a pretty high level of energy. But when I get on overload, my body has a way of letting me know. Over the years, it has manifested itself through hives, back pain, mouth ulcers, fever blisters, and heart palpitations. With each occurrence, it seemed God was trying to get my attention by reminding me of Psalm 46:10, “Be still . . . cease striving . . . let go . . . relax . . . and know that I am God.”

Why is it so hard for some of us to take time to rest in the Lord? For me the best answer is summed up in the following quote by Chuck Swindoll.

“Busyness rapes relationships. It substitutes shallow frenzy for deep friendship. It promises satisfying dreams but delivers hollow nightmares. It feeds the ego but starves the inner man. It fills a calendar but fractures a family. It cultivates a program but plows under priorities.”

Busyness is probably the number one stealer of the true rest that God intended for His children. And the world doesn’t help by applauding and exalting the workaholic busy-is-better mentality. To combat this, I offer a few suggestions to help renew the mind and body when it needs respite.

  • Remember: You are not indispensable, so don’t be afraid to share the workload.
  • If you are exhausted, stop and take a break! (easier said than done, I know; but try)
  • Ask God (and others) to reveal any unhealthy/unnecessary habits you may have that rob you of your time and energy. Be willing to make some changes.
  • Take periodic breaks from your daily routine by: relaxing, taking some deep breaths, sipping on a cup of coffee/tea/chai, listening to soothing music, reading something enjoyable, or simply ‘being’ with God.
  • God took time to rest – enough said!
